Called to Preach

Called to Preach is designed for those who have not completed formal preaching training, supply pastors seeking a basic refresher course, and others exploring the call to preach.  Called to Preach is the required preaching course for the Certified Pulpit Supply track, the Missouri Annual Conference's Lay Education Pathway. During this class session, each participant will learn about various components of sermon preparation and will preach a sermon for encouragement and critique via ZOOM AFTER the course is completed.  Rev. Geoff Posegate will facilitate this course; Geoff is a retired United Methodist pastor and has served in Missouri churches for 43 years. 

Class Details and Logistics:

Saturday, April 15, at Salem UMC

9:00 AM- 4:30 PM.

Check-in begins at 8:30 AM.  

Course Fee: $15, which covers lunch and snacks which are provided (Fee is nonrefundable)

Salem UMC is a handicapped-accessible facility. 

Before Class

Participants must purchase the course book: From Pew to Pulpit, A Beginner's Guide to Preaching by Clifton F. Guthrie. You can purchase it from Cokesbury or Amazon. Please read the book in its entirety before the April 15 class. There is also a pre-Course requirement that involves viewing 2 video links that will be provided after your register for the class.   

There are no prerequisites for this course.

Post-Course requirement:  There will be the opportunity to prepare and present a sermon via ZOOM at a later date following the completion of the class to receive credit for the course.  The details will be worked out with the instructor.
