Online Polity Lay Education Course

posted on August 29

Registration closes September 24 or when 20 participants have registered.

About this Course

Have you ever wondered how this movement of Methodism started, how and why we do what we do and how we do it, at the local, district and Conference level? This class unpacks the history of Methodism, along with why we believe what we believe, and the “hows and whys” of why we are organized the way we are. This is a great class for all laity to understand who the people called Methodists really are. The class will be taught by Rev. Ann Mowery, a retired Methodist elder.

This course is included in the lay education certification pathway. This lay education class is open to all and is required for laity seeking to obtain Certified Lay Minister status.

Preparing for the Course

Before class begins, purchase the required reading text: Life Together in the United Methodist Connection by Beth Galbreath. You are expected to have read the first chapter before the first class session.

Online purchasing options: Two other books are recommended for this course, but they are not required. These are great reads to learn more about UMC polity. They will not be required reading for the class.

The Method of Our Mission by Laceye C. Warner Polity, Practice, and the Mission of the United Methodist Church by Thomas Edward Frank

During the Course

Viewing videos, reading and other homework is expected between weekly meetings. The videos are narrated and produced by Rev. Nate Berneking, Conference director of finance and administration.
